Developed and delivered by leaders in the field of veterinary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), this 4-hour lab will build on the online videos and lectures (included in registration). Through practical, small-group, hands-on training using live dogs, participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice common veterinary POCUS techniques currently used to assess the abdomen, pleural space, lung, and heart. Additionally, we will use phantoms (training models) to practice ultrasound-guided vascular access (venipuncture and IV catheter placement). This lab will focus on honing techniques developed to increase veterinary POCUS diagnostic accuracy and help facilitate easier application in everyday veterinary practice. These are all techniques any practitioner can perform and use in everyday practice! We will also briefly review basic ultrasound machine functions, settings, and probe manipulations at the start of the lab.
The online pre-course material consists of 8 hours of online video content delivered by an internist and a criticalist. They cover the key binary diagnostic questions that can rapidly and easily be answered with minimal ultrasound training, as well as define veterinary POCUS, and discuss its evolution. The videos will summarize the clinically driven questions to ask and answer in different settings and discuss which POCUS skills to use in which patients. These online didactic sessions are developed to specifically complement and facilitate the 4-hour hands-on in-person POCUS workshops and are divided into short 20-minute sections for easy review.
The in-person workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Simulation Lab in Ithaca, NY. There are two sessions available (one in the morning and one in the afternoon – choose one). The purchase price covers access to the online content and attendance at the in-person workshop. It does not include travel, lodging, etc.
The course is RACE (pending) and NYS approved for 12 CE credits. There are 8 RACE credits/NYS CE for completing the online training and 4 RACE/NYS CE credits (approval pending) for the in-person training.
Cancellation and refund policy: The online portion of the course is non-refundable once purchased. Cancellations for the in-person lab before 11:59pm EST Feb 17, 2025 will receive a partial refund (the cost of the in-person session). Cancellations after this date will only be refunded if we can fill the empty seat with a confirmed attendee from the waitlist - refunds are NOT guaranteed after Feb 17, 2025. Please contact Amanda Kempf (amw18@cornell.edu) as early as possible so we have the greatest opportunity to fill the empty seat and get you a refund.
